If your friend has had all that happen to an 07, I'd reevaluate your defintion of a good driver. With the possible exception of the BOV, a blown turbo and a burnt clutch are sure signs of someone who either:
A: doesn't know how to drive a manual very well
B: doesn't know how to treat a turbo vehicle
or
C: a combination of the two
I'm not defending VW in the least but that just sends up red flags in my eyes.
