It's been well documented that VW had major problem with their 1.8 or 2.0 turbo's. In fact there was a recall. Don't remember which motor though.

I personally still like VW product. My old lady drives a Jetta VR6. Very quite and smooth. Very stable above triple digits.

Only thing i replaced was a battery & water pump. But the car is a 2001. So, it's been very reliable.

If you don't work on you own car, I wouldn't suggest buying german. The dealer makes you sign over your house before they will even look at your car. If you don't have a house, have your left nut ready.
