smaller antenna

not sure if anyone cares, but i got sick of the huge antenna that came with my caliber and replaced it with a 17" black one that had the same "wrapped wire" style of the oem. also, i noticed no signal loss on am or fm stations

Most shorter antennas preform porrer. That is great.

The standard antenna on cars is not really an am/fm antenna. And by am I mean 540-1600khz and by fm I mean 88-108Mhz, not really am or fm. The center of the fm radio band is (88+108) / 2 = 98Mhz. The standard antenna is a 1/4 wave. Almost all radios (am/fm, cb, 2-way, police, ham, transmitters, etc) need a 50 ohm antenna. The 1/4 wave antenna provides just that with no additional tuning or coils, therefore it is popular. The formula for the length of antenna is 468 / frequency in Mhz = 1/2 wave in feet. 468/98=4.775 feet 4.775/2=2.387 2.387*12=28.65" Therefore an antenna for the FM radio band is exactly 28.6" Anything longer or shorter will not perform properly.

Yes. Many of us still build our own antennas from scratch. All you need is the formula, and wire.

I twigged on to the fact you probably had ticket from the formula
quote,I have held mine since 1979 and my call is VE3LVK.
I run tribander(2m,440,220) and APRS out of the Caliber at the moment
and work mainly 17,40 meters out of shack where I run several
homebuilt wire antennas plus Cushcraft 5 band vertical.
There are several hams on the different Caliber forums, think last
count including you will make 6.
73 good luck in the new year!
