Dodge unloads the 300-hp Caliber SRT-4

Our minds are still reeling at the thought of pushing 300-hp through the front wheels of an “econobox” to comment too much on the new Dodge Caliber SRT-4. It’s quite frankly mind boggling, though not that surprising from the speed freaks at Dodge’s SRT division.

According to Dodge, four numbers are important when contemplating the significance of the Caliber SRT-4: 85, 125, 300 and 260. Eighty-five represents how much more horsepower the Caliber SRT-4 has than the Neon SRT-4 it replaces, which means it produces 125 hp per liter of displacement with a total output of 300 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Umm… wow. Just wow.

The prodigious amount of power provided by the turbocharged 2.4L VVT “World Engine” is chopped up and served by a six-speed manual and delivered via the front wheels, which has to be one scary fun sub-six-second ride to 60.

The company says in its release that the mission of SRT is to provide benchmark performance for the best price, so we’ll be eager to find out later today what that means in terms of dollars and cents. Either way, the first shocker of the 2006 Chicago Auto Show goes to Dodge.

High-caliber Performance: With 300 Horsepower, All-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 to Dominate Sport-compact Market

• Tire-smoking 300 horsepower -- 85 more than the original Dodge SRT4 -- and 260 lb.-ft. of torque
• 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds
• All-around performance of a true “tuner car” right from the manufacturer
• Benchmark performance at the best price

Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) group will take the SRT4 reputation to new heights with the introduction of the all-new, 300-horsepower 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4.

“The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 achieves the SRT mission of offering benchmark performance for the best price,” said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Marketing, Chrysler Group. “With 300 horsepower under the hood, the Dodge Caliber SRT4 will dominate the sport-compact market.”

With true tuner performance right out of the box and a great price, enthusiasts immediately took to the original SRT4, which was introduced in 2003 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. In the 2003-2005 model years, more than 25,000 Dodge SRT4s were sold.

“We couldn’t wait to infuse Dodge Caliber with the SRT formula,” said Murphy. “The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 delivers a strong dose of all-around performance while delivering at least 28 miles per gallon on the highway. Our new SRT pocket rocket will be a hoot to drive.”

Pushing 300-hp through the front wheels?

Dodge is still looking at uniqueness and performance but really, do we need to see autos that will continue to add to the already massive oil and gas consumptions? Don't get me wrong on the great design, sharp looks and all.
With fuel at nearly $3.00/gl. we are sure to not see too many vehicles of this caliber hitting main stream IMHO. I am seeing this from a stockowner's point of view. As long as we continue to consume that will show demand and prices will increase on the petroleum we are dependent on to maintain and run these machines. Thanks for letting me share.

Yes, it would be nice if the Caliber had been more green fuel equipped.
I guess it will still be a long time before we get less oil dependent.
Hmmmm.... where are all the chemists who could help us out and create an alternative fuel that would run in petroleum based cars? I just hope there is not a gas shortage or total wipe out.

Are you kidding me? They're bringing out a green fuel model in November?
Darn it!!! Too bad they can't retro fit the current ones. That would probably cost a small fortune.

In a way Iam happy that it isn't AWD...For one is the continuing of dominance on the highway which the original SRT-4 is known for. Drivetrain loss is another reason, it would be the same exact thing as an STI...300 crank and 240ish wheel. The final reason I can think of right now is weight. add another 300-400lbs onto the Caliber and once again your just another STI.

Then again with out AWD we wont have the nice drivability in winter conditions or the amazing out of the box handeling. So I guess pick or choose what type of vehicle you want. There will NEVER be a car that everyone will look at a love.

whats realy going on

Hi all new here but read this and wanted to clear some stuff up. I work with Chrysler every day, I am a suplier and lideraly across the street from there HQ in Auburn Hills, MI. First there is no plan for a green model. I think what they where refering to was the SRT that is due in late 2006. Seconed I talked to a friend of mine that works on the Skunk werks projects and she said that Chrisler still dosen't have a firm date and it could be the begining of next year. Sorry I am just as bumed as everyone else. I want one too. I see about 5 SRT-4's a day that they are road testing but its just not exacly ready yet.
