I had my Jeep Compass towed now check engine light on. Why?

Someone slashed my tires (neighborhood kids prank on holloween). Everything was fine except the tire of course. I had a tow company deliver it to Bridgestone to change the tire for me and when I picked it up the check engine light was on. How could this have happened? Its brand new 2007 lease. Could the tow truck company knocked something out of whack when delivering? Or bridgestone maybe? Where should I start?

The check engine lights in any newer vehicle can come on for any number of reasons. My check engine light in my 2001 ford escort came on after my check gas cap light came on for more than an hour. The tires being slashed could have easily set off the check engine light if there is any sort of alarm for low or flat tire alert. You can go to your local auto store and have them hook up an instrument to your jeeps computer that will read a code and tell them why the light is on. They will generally reset the alarm for $50 or so. Good luck!

If the kids slashed your tires, how do you know they didn't also do something to make your check engine light come on?
They could have put something in your gas tank, or cut wires under the car.

The best think to do is to ask the Bridgestone shop if they noticed the light on when it arrived. If they say yes, pay them to diagnose. When they find the answer, ask them if it is something that could have been knocked loose during the tow. If not, you're responsible. If so, contact the tow company, armed with a statement from the Bridgestone dealer.
