Fiysler/Chriat merge

It looks like our Calibers might be replaced with a diet, european, vanilla flavored hatchback:

http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2009/...product/4.html

"The Grande Punto isn't really Fiat's best, but it's better than what Chrysler currently offers small car buyers, said Matt Stone, executive editor of Motor Trend."

WOW. Even if this was taken out of context, better how? Cheaper at the expense of your own safety? Less room inside? Body styling inspired by toasters?

I bought this car - and the former sxt - because it wasn't a fit, aveo, powerwheels, etc.

If that car gets good mileage, and is more reliable and put together more solid than Chryslers current lineup, as well as being competitive in price, it will sell. I drove a Fit for a year before getting the Caliber, and while it was everything I just wrote above, I just never really felt all that safe hauling 2 kids around in it, but they have sold quite a lot of them here. I see more Fits on the road than I do Calibers.

i drove european spec ford fiesta's and escorts before the caliber. My wife drive's a ford focus. I feel that its ok since every other car hear is around the same size but There is no way i will have her driving around in a car that small in the states because everyone else has a suv, large car, or a truck. Until the average size of an american car starts going down when i get back to the states I wont have my wife drive anything less than a 4x4.

Saying that tho about the fiat, i drove one just like that as a rental and wasnt too bad. Has a few neat features and the interior styling was pretty sweet. Don't really know about the safety ratings on it though.

I guess I just don't like the constant bashing of our cars, and certainly don't like hearing that this model helped sink Chrysler (in another article off that site).

I guess I just don't want Chrysler to loose their identity over this deal....

Honestly I'm not too sure how I feel about Dodge getting in bed with "Fix It Again Tony". But since I'm a car owner and not a share holder I guess that really doesn't matter.

joint ventures and mergers are good from an engineering and manufacturing point of view. and i'm sure in other ways too.
plenty of mitsu tech under your hoods. and mine too.

fiat owns ferrari.

europeans know how to make compact cars, small cars, and sports cars.

I feel it can only help the brand. That being said, I don't see myself running out and buying a 500.

You wont have to worry they are taking just the basic under pinnings, Dodge will still be responsible for exterior styling and dimensions. Just look at Chrysler and Mercedes cars, they use the basic same under pinnings but are completely different top to bottom.

One thing you can look forward to is lighter weight chassis thus ending up with lighter vehicles.

This merger will be the worst thing to happen to Dodge. Fiat cars are known throughout Europe for being crap, poorly built, cheap interiors, terrible build quality and totally unexciting. People only drive them because they are cheap and gas prices in England where I'm from is around $12.00 a gallon.

Fiats depreciate dramatically. The worst cars I have ever driven are Fiats. Don't do it.
