Wasn't sure where this should go, intercooler spray

Since the intercooler is part of the turbo system, I thought it might be here. If this is a redundant question, I won't be upset if it gets deleted.

Anyway, I've seen some guys running around with "sprayers" on thier intercoolers. Being a total n00b, every time I try to ask about it, neither of us has any idea what I'm talking about, lol. I've gathered that it makes the intercooler colder, further reducing the temperature inside. I guess.

So what I wanted to know: what exactly is it spraying on the intercooler, does it work, and would it be of any benefit to a car with none to little modification?

Thanks!

Water works. It lowers the intercooler temperature putting a colder charge of air into the engine for more performance. Colder air is denser, creating a better fuel mixture. It would definitely be a benefit to the car.

Putting a better intercooler or one that runs cooler is like putting a cold air intake kit on a naturally aspirated engine.

Really? Water? I mean, that makes sense, but I thought it was something crazier than water. Cool.

some spray water, some winshield fluid and others nitrous.

if your going with water do some searching on the internet because there are a ton of how-to's to make your own from random parts.

with water theres a few things to remember, 1 is to make sure you have a fine mist. it works by the heat transfering from the fmic to the water droplets. the droplets then evaporate and take the heat with them. if the drops are to heavy they will take longer to evap and not work as well as a fine mist. 2 is having check valves. most of the time you container will be higher than the fmic and with the lines running down it will cause a syphone (sp). so after you run it once the water will keep going until it empties the canister. check valves can help this because the valve will need a degree of pressure to open it and the syphone alone wont do it.

the nitrous ones can be bought by most of the leading nitrous kit companies like zex and nos.

the csrt stock fmic is a big pos and youd be better spending the money on upgrading it than putting a sprayer on there.

I agree save up and get a better intercooler & sprayer. I havent seen water sprayed onto the cooler tho. But ive seen N2o. I would go with Co2 or N2o.

Co2 is great, just don't spray it when your running. Even a little bit getting sucked into the intake will kill the power output of the motor (Co2 is used for putting out fires, remember). Water, great if you have a way to cool it. Problem with water is if you run the tank in your trunk and you live in the southern states you might as well pour hot water on the intercooler.

My choice, N2O. Its burns well with the combustion gasses, cools a little better then Co2 (about -20 degrees less) and its not that much more then Co2. You also have it there just in case you ever want to run N2O on the car.

They all work, but as I have pointed out... some work better than others.

my 05 sti used to just use distilled water. The bottle was in the trunk. I never used it much, sold it with the "stock water" lol
